Common IV Infusion Therapies Used to Manage Ulcerative Colitis / Crohn's Disease

Ulcerative Colitis /  Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation of your digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. Inflammation caused by Crohn's disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people.  We at IV Care Options want to help you manage these symptoms by providing skilled care when your physician orders an infusion therapy.

Remicade®

(Infliximab)
This medication is helpful in reducing the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease by binding to a protein called tumor necrosis factor-alpha.  This infusion will last no more than 2 hours and will need to be infused at 0, 2, 6, and 8 weeks.  Your infusion will be every 8 weeks after this. Entyvio®

(Vedolizumab)
This medication treats gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation that occurs in adults with moderately to severely active Ulcerative Colitis and Chrohn's disease and maybe an option if other medications didn't work or couldn't be tolerated: including steroids, immunosuppressants, or biologic therapies.  This infusion lasts no less than 30 minutes and will be infused at 0, 2, 6, and 8 weeks followed by an infusion every 8 weeks.

(Ustekinumab)
This medication for Chrohn's works by targeting IL-12 and IL-23, proteins in your body which are thought to be associated with gastrointestinal inflammation in Crohn's disease. You will receive one dose by infusion, which will take no less than one hour, then you will receive/give yourself injections under your skin every 8 weeks after.
